A soft-tissue injury affects parts of the body that aren’t bones or organs. Your muscles and tendons, for example, are soft tissues that could suffer an injury in an accident. Whiplash, pulled muscles, burns, and strains are examples of soft tissue injuries. Soft-tissue damage may occur in car crashes, slip and fall accidents, workplace incidents, and sports incidents. In cases involving negligence, someone else could be responsible for paying for your damages.

We treat these injuries with the same respect and care as we would more serious injuries. We know that soft tissue damage can still impact a client for months, years, or even for life. What are the Different Types of Soft Tissue Injuries?

Injuries to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fat, blood vessels, skin, and nerves are “soft tissue injuries.” Soft-tissue injuries can happen due to blunt force trauma, tissue damage, penetration injuries, overexertion, or twisting muscles the wrong way. Soft tissue injuries can be very painful for the victim, as well as slow to heal. Different types of soft tissue injuries and their common symptoms are as follows:

  • Sprains and Strains. Sprains and strains can happen when an outside force pushes the joint or muscles beyond their normal range of motion, causing tears or over-stretching of the soft tissues and fibers. Signs of a strain or sprain include swelling, discoloration, pain, and inability to bear weight on the affected limb.
  • Bruises or Contusions. Soft-tissue bruising can occur when something makes harmful contact with parts of the body, such as a football player tackling another player. Bruising, hematoma (bleeding in the soft tissues), and compression can cause skin discoloration and/or swelling.
  • Overuse Injuries. The soft tissues can sustain injuries from repetitive use, overuse, or use in the wrong ways. Any constant pushing, pulling, twisting, or straining over time can cause soft tissue injuries. Symptoms generally develop slowly, and can include pain, inflammation, or inability to use the affected limb.

Staying limber and stretching often can help prevent soft tissue injuries. In unexpected accidents, however, it can be impossible to avoid damage to the ligaments and muscles. If someone else caused your painful and debilitating soft tissue injury in LA, consult with one of our local attorneys. You are likely eligible for compensation.

How Long Do Soft Tissue Injuries Take to Heal?

Most soft-tissue injuries will fully heal in one to six weeks. The amount of time it takes to regain full use of the body part (with or without chronic pain) will depend on your age, health, treatments, and severity of injury. You will need to discuss your individual prognosis with a physician for more specific information. Almost all soft-tissue injuries, however, will disable the victim for at least some period of time.

Insurance Claims for Soft Tissue Injury

Don’t try to manage a soft tissue injury insurance claim on your own. Since these injuries don’t show up in x-rays, like broken bones, they can be more difficult to prove to insurance claims adjusters. You will need to know the specific medical records and documentation the company seeks for a speedy and successful claim. Otherwise, you could find yourself in a battle with an insurance company in pursuit of the compensation you need to move on with your life.
