Biomedical Engineering Professor at Newcastle University Dr. Thomas Joyce addresses those affected
March 13, 2011
The recent DePuy hip implant recall has affected patients worldwide. According to Dr. Thomas Joyce, a biomedical engineering professor at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom, the recall “is the biggest disaster in the history of orthopaedics.” Considering that over 96,000 patients worldwide have been affected by hip replacement failure, including 3,500 Irish people, referring to the recall as a “medical disaster” does not seem so far-fetched. In reflecting on the seriousness of the DePuy hip implant system recall, Dr. Joyce stated, “To think here we are in the 21st century, in 2011, that we have such major failures. This has major implications around the world.” BreakingNews.ie.com reported that thousands of Irish patients who received the hip implants since 2004 may require hip implant corrective surgery.
