Posted on May 8, 2019

For the fourth consecutive year, Panish | Shea | Ravipudi LLP attorney Deborah S. Chang has been named to the Daily Journal’s list of Top Women Lawyers in California for 2019. The publication’s West Coast ranking recognizes 100 women lawyers throughout the state who have made a difference to their clients, their firms, and their profession.                                                                                                                                    The Daily Journal article featuring Ms. Chang highlights her work on cases involving children who have suffered traumatic brain injuries. The first case highlighted involves an 11-day-old infant aboard a bus that crashed and rolled onto its side, resulting in the death of four passengers. The infant’s sensory perception wasn’t yet developed and now at 4 years old, tests revealed the child is disabled.

A second case highlighted involves a 10-year-old girl who suffered a brain injury after she was “clotheslined” by a steel cable and struck her head on the cement. Before her injury, the child scored in the gifted range in different areas despite her ADHD diagnosis at age 3.

“After the incident, everything changed,” Ms. Chang told the Daily Journal. “Then she went below average.”

Shortly before trial, Ms. Chang brought in experts who testified about the difficulties a child diagnosed with ADHD and a traumatic brain injury faces. The case settled for $3,000,000 on the eve of trial.
