Investigation Alleges Cover-Up Of Possible Bay Bridge Safety Issues

An investigation into the construction of the new section of the Bay Bridge in Northern California has revealed potential deficiencies and a lack of transparency that could spell trouble for the structure.  The Senate Transportation Committee called for the investigation, which discovered that allegations about a lack of proper safety procedures were continually extinguished by Caltrans as construction was ongoing on the project.  The report alleges that engineers who brought up safety concerns were placed elsewhere, people were fired, and that Caltrans basically did whatever could be done to keep issues from coming to light.  It also discovered that the Toll Bridge Program Oversight Committee was exempted from oversight.
