Distracted Driving Study Draws A Surprising Conclusion

Posted on January 3, 2014

Another study has come out that highlights the continued threat posed by distracted driving, but there’s one finding from the study that is sure to rankle some safety advocates.  The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute carried out the research, which involved an analysis of 42 teens and 109 experienced adults at the wheel by way of a series of sensors hooked up to the vehicles.  What they found was that texting, whether that be reading or sending the communication, quadruples the threat of a crash, and the risk was increased seven times if an individual dialed or reached for a phone.  However, they also surmised that speaking on a phone did not increase the risk of an accident.  One University of Utah researcher with experience on this topic has already noted certain deficiencies of the study.
