Take Steps To Prevent A Home Invasion

Posted on January 17, 2014

A home invasion can be a traumatizing situation, and you certainly never want to be a part of one.  Although it’s never possible to truly eliminate the danger, there are certain precautions you can take in order to protect yourself and your family from such an occurrence.  A new report relates some tips from the Sheriff’s Office of Ascension Parish, East Baton Rouge, and you should keep them in mind.

First, you should have the right barriers in place so that it’s hard for a potential burglar to gain access.  Deadbolts and solid doors can go a long way toward preventing a home invasion, although these of course won’t mean much if you don’t take the time to lock them whenever you’re gone and even when you’re inside the home.

If you’re not expecting guests and there’s a knock on your door and a ring at the doorbell, then approach the door with caution.  Get a peephole installed so that you can always peer outside to identify trouble, but even if you don’t have a peephole, that doesn’t make it acceptable to peer out the door without verifying who is there.  Look out a window, call out to the person, but do not open the door until you confirm their identity and intentions.

Finally, invest in a security system, and be ready to call the police if someone is skulking around your property.
