California Furniture Rule Removes Flammability Benchmark

Posted on January 13, 2014

A new report bemoans the removal of a fire safety rule that the authors believe is an important way to ensure the safety of citizens across California and the entire country.  According to the report, a California flammability standard that has been in place for nearly 40 years will come to an end due to changes in regulations.  That test makes it so that any furniture brought to the market is able to withstand exposure to open flames without leading to a serious fire.  The thinking behind the removal of this rule seems to be that cigarettes, which are the main cause of such fires, are not nearly as common as they used to be, and that it’s more important now to protect people from flame retardant chemicals that might be available in furniture.
