How Cyclists Can Promote Their Own Safety

Posted on December 12, 2013

In a response to a Dear Abby Column, the East Bay Bicycle Coalition’s Director has offered some insights into safe cycling with the aim of helping persons on bikes in the state of California avoid calamitous accidents.  He speaks about the importance of treating stop signs the same way one would if they were in an automobile, meaning that a cyclist should come to a full stop and look in all directions before moving ahead.  He also notes that, while cellphone usage, including texting, will not cause a cyclist to run afoul of the law, such an activity is still dangerous and should be avoided by persons on bikes hoping to ensure their own safety.  And in addition to simply wearing bright clothing, he suggests that reflectors and lights be used so that there can be no doubts about a cyclist’s presence.
