Protecting Pets From The Dangers Of New Year’s Eve

Posted on December 31, 2013

On New Year’s Eve, one of the biggest things that pet owners will have to worry about is that their animals will remain safe amidst the hubbub that often accompanies the holiday.  Thankfully, a new report finds the Houston chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals offering tips to citizens on how to protect pets from typical harms that may crop up tonight.

If you’re hosting a party, or you’re simply worried about fireworks or rowdy neighbors in the area, then you’ll want to keep pets inside in a space of the house where they’ll feel safe.  Seeing as how they might get nervous, it might be best to shut them off from guests in a spot where they’ll have access to food, water, and toys that they like to lug around.

You should also tell your guests that your pet is not to be given food or beverages that are more suited to humans.  Chocolate and alcohol can be poisonous to animals, as can those poinsettias and other plant life that have been left over since Christmas.  Warn guests and keep animals away from these things.

Finally, if your dog is going to be outdoors, understand that their nervousness from something like fireworks could lead them to jump the fence.  Be ready for this possible occurrence by keeping an eye on pets when festivities are in full swing.
