Safeguard Your Home When You Head Out For Holiday Shopping

We’ve spent some time going over those ways that you can ensure your personal safety when out shopping for the holidays, but there’s one area we haven’t reflected on too much:  entering and leaving your own home.  As you focus on filling out your Christmas list, it becomes easy to forget about those precautions that can keep you and your home safe from harm while you’re out shopping.  Thankfully, a new report provides some crucial safety tips from the Police Department of Tallahassee, Florida.

Crooks realize that many homes will be filled to bursting with expensive holiday gifts, and as a result, they may brazenly walk from house to house, trying doors until they find one that has been left open.

When you head out, make sure to lock your doors and windows and close the garage to prevent burglary.  If you’re going to be away for a lengthy period of time, think about flicking on some lights or putting them on timers so it looks like someone is home.  This also helps set your mind at ease when you get back home, as you won’t be welcomed by concealing darkness.

Keep the doors of your vehicle locked until you get back to your residence, and only exit when you believe it’s safe to do so.  If you notice that a vehicle may have followed you, drive to a police station or elsewhere to throw them off, and if you believe a burglary has occurred at your residence, call the cops at once.
