Cold Weather Prompts Renewal Of Car Seat Safety Warning

Posted on December 5, 2013

With cold descending upon much of the country, this is an important time to take a look at one of those things that many parents do wrong when strapping their children into a car seat:  keeping the straps looser than they should be.  You obviously want to bundle your child up as warm as possible when the temperature is sub-freezing, but the space such a large jacket can create between the straps of the seat and the child’s body can prove dangerous during a collision.

A new report provides direction from a spokesperson from the Zero Fatalities group who stresses the need to tighten the straps to the child’s body rather than their coat.  Understand the importance of not being able to pinch a large amount of the strap’s fabric between your fingers, as having this excess slack suggests that the belt isn’t tight enough.
