Automobile Black Boxes Grow Increasingly Common

Posted on November 12, 2013

A new report out of Tampa Bay takes a look at the increasing availability of so-called automobile black boxes, which can monitor the circumstances surrounding a crash to determine what may have went wrong.  One engineer interviewed for the article noted that most people probably don’t realize that their automobile is equipped with such a system, which now comes on every new vehicle produced.  By monitoring things like vehicle speed, seatbelt usage, vehicle angle, the state of the brakes, and more, the black boxes can take a snapshot of your vehicle as it appeared at the time of the crash.  Investigators can then use this information to develop an idea of what went wrong, especially if a driver’s claims seem suspect.  Some have grown concerned about the privacy infringement this tech could create.
