The West Kingston, Rhode Island-based Schneider Electric IT Corporation has announced the recall of an astounding 15 million SurgeArrest surge protectors. The recall affects those products that were made prior to 2003 and that are of the APC 7 and 8 series. These items are reportedly in danger of overheating, a condition that can lead to smoking and even melting of the unit which can contribute to a fire. 700 incident reports have been filed, 55 of which led to property damage. 13 people have reported such injuries as burns and inhalation of smoke in association with these incidents. The products, which were sold at various retailers between 1993 and 2002, should be unplugged and the company should be contacted for a new product.
