FHA and FMCSA Allowed To Continue Operation During Shutdown

Posted on October 2, 2013

The government shutdown may be having a severe impact on safety throughout the country, but one area it reportedly is not going to impact, at least in the short-term, is various highway safety projects.  Because the Highway Trust Fund provides the funds necessary for the continued operation of the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, these agencies will be allowed to stay open for the immediate future.  That means that various highway construction and safety initiatives will continue unhindered for the moment.  It also means that commercial vehicle safety will still be assured by the roadside inspections that are necessary to vouch for the safety of drivers and their vehicles.
