Officials Hope To Get Walking School Bus Off The Ground

Posted on September 18, 2013

Officials in the Winton and Beachwood-Franklin areas of California are concerned that a walking school bus program designed to encourage safe practices will be squelched before it even has a chance to come into being.  One of the program coordinators said that they have had trouble getting adults to take part in the initiative, which involves kids walking together to school under the watchful eye of a parent.  $50,000 was provided to the area by the Merced County Human Services Agency in order to make the event possible, but volunteers will need to pop up in order to keep that money.  The hope is that such volunteers will be acquired by October, when various counties take part in an initiative that seeks to reinforce the importance of children biking or walking to school, getting needed exercise in the process.
