In the state of California, drivers are already prohibited from using their cellphones in any manner while at the wheel. That includes both text messaging and talking on the phone. But one area that the law doesn’t extend to is hands-free calls, which are still legal. However, that looks to no longer be the case for teenagers. Yesterday, a bill that would outlaw even hands-free cellphone usage among teen drivers was passed by the state Assembly, and with a Senate vote having already taken place, the measure will now move to the Governor. The new pending law has the support of myriad organizations, including the Auto Club of Southern California and the California Association of Highway Patrolmen.
