A list has come out from the Christian Science Monitor that outlines what the editors of the story believe to be the safest automobiles on the road. To compile the ratings, the persons behind the list took into consideration safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
It was quite easy to come up with a top ten list after doing so, as there were only ten vehicles that got both a five star rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick + designation from the IIHS. The list involves vehicles of either the 2013 or 2014 model year.
Topping the list was the Dodge Dart, followed by the Ford Focus Electric car and the Ford Fusion. Filling out the top five were the Honda Accord and the Kia Optima.
The report also notes that drivers shouldn’t look solely at the ratings from the NHTSA and the IIHS when purchasing a vehicle, although those are certainly a great start. They advise going for a test drive prior to any purchase and making note of anything that could be indicative of a future safety issue. Pay attention to how it feels to sit inside and how the vehicle itself handles under your command. Also inquire as to the various onboard safety features available.
