Verify Tire Capabilities Before Heading Out On A Labor Day Trip

Posted on August 29, 2013

If you’re going to be traveling at all over Labor Day, one of the most important things you can do to ensure safety is verify the wellbeing of the area where the rubber meets the road:  your tires.  When your tires are capable of safe transport, you greatly boost your chances of making it to your destination in one piece.  Thus, you might consider some of the tips on hand from a new report.

First, you’ll want to carry out regular maintenance checks of your tires well throughout the year.  A tire gauge should allow you to make sure you’re meeting the recommendations listed on the tires and on the owner’s manual.  Not only do you get more bang for your buck in terms of fuel, but the proper pressure allows you to more easily avoid blowouts and other types of damage.

Treads are another important factor.  Many mechanics advise taking a penny and sticking it in the tread.  If you’re able to make out Abe Lincoln’s head, then the tread has become too low.  If budget becomes an issue when it’s time to buy new tires, invest in new rear tires prior to front ones, as the former are responsible for providing your automobile with stability.  However, when tread is low, you really should buy four new tires.

Finally, make sure you rotate your tires no less often than 8,000 miles, sometimes at even shorter intervals.
