The California Office of Traffic Safety is providing funds to the city of Sunnyvale as a means to crack down on drunk driving and promote pedestrian and bicycle safety. The first grant, which the city has received six years in a row, will allow for the erection of checkpoints designed to identify those drivers who are intoxicated at the wheel. But the more hefty grant will be earmarked for various education and prevention initiatives designed to eliminate accidents involving persons on foot or on their bikes. With it, police will be able to lead education initiatives at schools and hand out bike lights to those in need. They’ll also be able to increase enforcement in those places where jaywalking and unsafe cycling have proven to be prevalent.
