In California and in numerous other areas across the country, Emeritus Senior Living will be taking part in an initiative known as the Shade Brigade. The effort will find Emeritus employees in the city of Bakersfield and elsewhere visiting the residences of seniors to provide water, a safety check, and education on the dangers of heat-related illness. According to the CDC, seniors’ inability to adjust to temperature shifts combined with a tendency to take medications and suffer from maladies that could impact a body’s response to heat makes them more susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Tips on beating the heat will be provided to all seniors and they’ll each be invited to a free meal in an air conditioned environment.
