Even as Texas lawmakers get ready to consider a texting and driving ban, the city of Houston is taking matters into its own hands. Yesterday, the Public Safety Committee of the Houston City Council met to talk about a potential statute that would make texting at the wheel an illegal act. The meeting only involved a discussion about the potential law; the council will not vote on the ordinance just yet. As proposed, the current bill in front of the committee would assess a whopping $500 fine against violators of the texting ban. The ordinance uses results from a recent study from the Transportation Institute at Texas A & M to back up the idea that a ban is necessary.
