Alamogordo Texting and Driving Ban Amended and Delayed

Posted on

We have an update on the city of Alamogordo, New Mexico’s proposed texting and driving ban that was set to come to a final vote this past Tuesday.  That meeting came to a head without the measure neither passing nor failing.  At what was to be the final reading of the ordinance, the City Commission decided to amend the measure over concerns that emergency responders would be unable to legally input commands into their in-vehicle devices because of the ban.  There was also no concrete definition of electronic device, something that the city’s attorney pointed out.  Therefore, the amendment was called for and passed, which means that the ordinance will now have to be read two additional times before it can become law.  This will mark the fourth such change that has prompted a delay in passage.
