61,409 Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro Vehicles Recalled Over Crash Risk

Posted on April 10, 2013

Jeep Liberty 4 x 2 vehicles of the 2008 model year and Dodge Nitro 4 x 2 vehicles of the 2007 and 2008 model years are being recalled by Chrysler.  61,409 vehicles could suffer from an issue wherein the transfer case heat shield can weaken the drive shaft due to excessive rubbing.  If this leads the drive shaft to experience a breakage, motive power can be compromised.  A portion of the component is also in danger of forcefully hitting the transfer case tunnel.  The airbag computer might misidentify this situation as a crash, and thus the airbags would suddenly go off in the midst of driving, compromising visibility and possibly leading to a collision.  Starting next month, the vehicles can be brought to a dealer for free repairs.
