Illinois Cellphone Driving Ban Receives House Approval

Posted on March 4, 2013

In Illinois, texting at the wheel has been illegal for a few years, but that isn’t the case with cellphone usage.  That could change, though, if a bill currently being considered by lawmakers continues on the road to passage.  At the end of last week, the state’s House voted by a 64-46 margin to approve a bill that would outlaw cellphone usage at the wheel.  Under the proposed law, only hands-free technologies would be allowed, as would any communications taking place during an emergency situation.  The Senate will now have to vote on the measure, which was opposed by those who say low-income households which can’t afford hands-free technology would be unfairly treated under the new law.
