FDA Strains Under The Weight of Budget Cuts
Could food safety be compromised by the budget cuts set to take effect today at the national level? Although the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration says steps are being taken to ensure food safety, even she concedes that the agency will be strained under the new budget reductions. She says that oversight will be potentially compromised, as will the organization’s ability to expand to new facilities. One estimate figures that there will be around 2,100 fewer inspections carried out this year than there were last year. However, the Commissioner stresses that this lack of inspections could be somewhat offset by cutting down the time it takes to carry out each inspection and using user fees to make up for some of the budget cuts.
