Oklahoma House Committee Approves Texting and Driving Ban

Posted on February 22, 2013

Oklahoma is one of the few holdouts that have yet to pass a ban on texting and driving.  Three lawmakers saw the need for such a bill and thus combined their proposals into one measure that would address the dangerous practice, and now, the ban has come one step closer to becoming law.

Earlier this week saw the House Public Safety Committee approving the law, which would ban texting at the wheel amongst all drivers except emergency responders.  The penalty assessed to such persons is to be capped at $500 if passage occurs.  There’s still a long way to go before the measure becomes law, though.  The House Calendar Committee has to vote in support of the law, at which point it will come up for a decision in front of the entire House.

The sponsor of the bill points to the threat posed to drivers by texting.  He believes that texting at the wheel is more of a hazard on the road than is drunk driving.  He also hopes that the efforts of both Republicans and Democrats, as well as the many agencies which attempt to make the roads safer overall, will finally be enough to get the measure passed.  With a few remaining legislators who disagree with such a ban, the hope is that they’ll finally see the advisability of such a statute.
