Ireland and Britain Burgers Recalled Over Horse Meat Fears

Posted on January 17, 2013

Consumers in Ireland and Britain were in for a shock when it was announced yesterday that as many as ten million burgers could have in fact contained horse meat in order to pad out the existing beef content.  A recall was issued accordingly by the Ireland-based Silvercrest Foods.  Investigators are looking into the issue, and at this point, some experts believe the presence of horse may have been the result of consumer fraud, as horse is far cheaper than beef.  A public health professor from Dublin’s University College, however, extolls the virtues of the testing procedures which revealed the horse meat, as Ireland is one of the few countries that require such testing.  Other countries simply focus on health threats.
