Free Weight Workbenches Recalled By Powertec Over Injury Risk

Posted on January 16, 2013

A company based right in Long Beach is recalling a series of workout items because of their potential to cause a user to sustain an injury.

Powertec announced the recall, which concerns freestanding workbenches meant to be used by persons engaging in free weight workouts.  Affected models include the Olympic Bench, the Utility Bench, and the Multipress with Isolateral Arms.  565 of these benches are being recalled, and each was sold around the country at various fitness shops between September 2011 and May of last year.  At that time and depending on the model, they cost between $299 and $549.

Each of these benches have a backrest adjuster that contains a certain weld that’s in danger of breaking.  If this were to occur while in use, the person lifting weights may potentially be injured.  One incident has already led to an injury, although the damage was reportedly minor.

These workbenches and the attendant weights should not be used until such time that consumers can fix the issue with a retrofit kit.  The company must be contacted to get a free one of these.  If consumers so choose, they can also opt to return the item and get their money back.
