Automobile recalls typically affect one series of vehicles, or maybe a couple if a certain defective component was installed across a number of automobile types. However, this next recall affects 12 separate types of vehicles from three separate automobile companies.
The one uniting factor is the fact that the recall was in all instances initiated by General Motors. A total of 54,686 vehicles are being recalled by the automaker, and each is of the 2013 model year. Silverado, Express, Tahoe, Avalanche, and Suburban vehicles from Chevy, Savana, Yukon, Yukon XL, and Sierra vehicles from GMC, and Escalade, Escalade EXT, and Escalade ESV vehicles are all encompassed within the recall announcement.
The recall stems from the fact that these vehicles are in danger of rolling away after the driver has placed them in park. This occurs due to either a potential fracture in the park lock cable or a malformation of the steering column lock actuator gear. In either instance, the result could be the same: a rollaway situation. Such an occurrence could lead people in the vicinity to be injured or property to sustain damage.
Owners should receive word of the issue from General Motors beginning on January 17. At that point, such persons can bring their vehicles in for a free inspection. Should the issue be discovered, component replacement will be provided at no cost.
