2012 Vehicle Recalls Do Not Damper Consumer Enthusiasm

We try to bring you the latest news regarding automobile recalls, as we feel that keeping oneself informed is necessary to preserve safety.  Now that we’re approaching the end of the year, it’s time to reflect on the year that was, and a new report does just that, offering up a list of the biggest recalls of the year.  But it also analyzes an interesting trend, which is that recalls don’t seem to bother drivers all that much.

Leading the list of automakers that issued the largest number of recalls was Toyota, whose recalls added up to around five million vehicles.  Honda clocked in at number two, with about 3.4 million automobiles recalled by the company.  Approximately 1.3 million vehicles were recalled by General Motors, while Ford followed with 1.1 million automobiles.

But even with these numbers, Honda and Toyota have seen a significant sales jump of 23.4% and 17.3% respectively.  A Kelley Blue Book analyst believes that recalls don’t deter consumer enthusiasm, and that such an announcement can actually improve perception of an auto brand.  The automaker is seen as taking steps to correct the issue, and this proactive approach is viewed as favorable by consumers.

That does not mean, though, that recalls should not be taken seriously.  Quite the opposite.  Consumers need to follow the directions of a recall immediately to preserve their own safety and the safety of others on the road.  Regardless of your opinion of an automaker, a safety issue is a safety issue and it needs to be addressed at once.
