Key West Police Place a Focus on Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety

Posted on December 17, 2012

Bicycle and pedestrian safety were the focus of a recent law enforcement program that was implemented in Key West, Florida from February through September of this year, and the results of the program, which was made possible due to a nearly $100,000 federal grant, are in.  The police in the area reportedly pulled over 2,500 errant cyclists during the operation, yet only 76 of those situations led to a ticket being issued.  The operation irked some cycling groups, such as the Key West Bicycle Association.  A spokesperson for that group said he would have rather seen the funds go toward creating better signage throughout the area.  A campaign scheduled to run through next year will find the police turning their attention to motorcycles.
