Compounding pharmacies have been in the news as of late following a fungal meningitis outbreak that stemmed from contaminated steroids distributed by the New England Compounding Center. The House of Representatives, in a bid to ensure safety from these types of outbreaks in the future, is looking into the possible passage of a bill known as the SAFE Compounded Drugs Act. If passed, the Food and Drug Administration would be tasked with compiling production standards that compounders would have to meet. A database of these facilities would also be put together, and state officials would be subject to FDA training on how to monitor these institutions.
