Police in Porterville, California have grown increasingly concerned about the potential for pedestrians to be harmed while traveling along local roads. Over the past six weeks or so, three pedestrians have died following a collision with a motor vehicle, which has led the police department to initiate an operation meant to encourage pedestrian safety. The effort will find officers in plainclothes walking through crosswalks in a bid to target those drivers who don’t give pedestrians the right of way. On the other hand, any illegal street crossing on the part of a pedestrian will also be targeted, and offenders can expect to be issued a $237 ticket. That’s even higher than the $200 citation awaiting drivers who are ticketed.
