Cocoa Latte Hot Drink Makers Recalled Because of Possible Lead Risk

Posted on November 19, 2012

The threat of potential lead poisoning has led a series of products to be recalled.

Focus Products Group International announced the recall, which pertains to Cocoa Latte Hot Drink Makers under the Back to Basics and West Bend brand names.  These items were sold across the country between 2004 and October of this year at a variety of retailers, as well as online at Amazon.

These cocoa makers have been recalled because of the propensity of certain internal components to leach lead.  This could cause lead to accumulate within the cocoa in heightened amounts that would pose a particular danger to children.  Consumer Reports explains that heavy metal lead poisoning might lead to brain and kidney damage, as well as anemia.  This recall also comes on the heels of the Centers for Disease Control actually lowering the levels of lead that are to be allowed in products that children might make contact with.  This occurred because of continued worries that absorption and retention of lead is greatly heightened in kids.

Thankfully, no one has reported becoming ill in conjunction with this product.  To make sure that continues, consumers should refrain from using the item.  Instead, they can get a replacement by calling the Focus Products Group.

Our hope is that all affected consumers can learn about this recall before an illness incident can occur.
