FDA Blocks Sunland’s Attempt to Reopen Doors Following Recalls

Posted on November 27, 2012

The Portales, New Mexico-based Sunland Inc., the company responsible for distributing peanut butter that led to a nationwide Salmonella outbreak, will not be reopening as they had originally planned.  Even though they wanted to reopen the doors of their peanut processing center today, the Food and Drug Administration has stepped in to put a halt to that attempt.  A 2011 law enabled the FDA to engage in such a tactic in order to prevent the production of unsafe foods, and this is the first time the organization has exercised that option.  The company, which produced many peanut products that had to be recalled recently to ensure consumer safety, expressed surprise at the decision and will now have to prove that reopening the facility would be safe for consumers.
