Third Quarter Sees Uptick in Number of Food Recalls Issued

Posted on November 20, 2012

A new report explains that there was a greater number of food recalls in the third quarter of this year than in the previous quarter.  By examining news releases and enforcement reports from the Food and Drug Administration, ExpertRECALL Stericycle was able to deduce that 414 separate recalls of food were had during the specified timeframe.  This equates to a 250% spike, although it should be noted that one reason for this might be because one recalled ingredient may be used in multiple products.  Only 30 recalls affected the entire country, whereas the remainder were geared specifically to a certain number of states.  Recalled mangoes made up a large portion of the issuances, and foodborne illnesses such as Salmonella, Listeria, and more made up nearly three quarters of recall announcements.
