18,000 Hustler and BigDog Lawn Mowers Recalled Over Fuel Leak Risk

Posted on November 1, 2012

The threat of a fire has reared its head once again, this time in conjunction with the usage of a certain set of lawnmowers.

The recall pertains to yellow Hustler lawn mowers and red BigDog lawn mowers.  Riding, zero turn riding, and walking lawn mowers are encompassed within the recall which was announced by the Hesston, Kansas-based Excel Industries.  A variety of serial numbers are included as part of the announcement, adding up to around 18,000 affected lawn mowers.

Inadequate sealing can be had in the fuel tank vent valve fitting.  In fact, 152 people have already reported experiencing just such a failure.  Although no one has reported sustaining an injury or having to deal with property damage, the fuel leak that might result from the defect does pose a distinct fire hazard should there be an ignition source nearby.

Depending on the type of lawn mower, the units cost anywhere from $2,900 to $21,000.  Customers would have been able to purchase them from dealers across the country between September 2010 and May of this past year.

No one should use these mowers until such time they can be repaired.  Contact a BigDog or Hustler dealer to get such repairs at no cost.  It might be winter, and so you might not be concerned about this now, but you don’t want to wait until the spring and potentially forget about the recall.
