Three Fireplace Models Recalled by Monessen Over Fire Threat

Posted on November 9, 2012

Three types of fireplaces have been recalled because of a sudden fire threat that could be posed by the items.

Those items are direct-vent and B-vent style Monessen, Vermont Castings, and Majestic fireplaces and inserts.  These gas fireplaces have a serial number that starts with either 11-X, 11-P, 12-X, or 12-P.  Monessen Hearth Systems announced the recall of the estimated 15,000 fireplaces, each of which works by way of a Signature Command electric control system.

The recall was initiated once it was discovered that the unit might not light properly thanks to a certain component of the control system found within the fireplace and insert.  However, gas would still flow under these circumstances, which could entail a fire risk if an ignition source were to be present as the gas continues to leak out.  Thankfully, no one has reported experiencing an incident or an injury at this time.

The fireplaces were available between October of last year and as recently as last month at fireplace dealers across the country.  Depending on the unit type, they could have ran a consumer anywhere from a little over $1,000 to $8,160.  Owners should flick the master control switch to the off position until such time that the issue can be fixed.  Free repairs can be obtained if consumers get in touch with Monessen.
