NECC Official Subpoenaed Ahead of Congressional Meningitis Hearings

Posted on November 8, 2012

There continues to be news in regards to the fungal meningitis outbreak that has plagued citizens across the country.

400 people have reportedly been infected at this point, and 30 have died, leaving members of Congress and other officials to try to figure out exactly what could have happened to lead us to this juncture.  To better ascertain the facts, Congress will hold a set of hearings on November 14 and 15.  Among those invited to speak are members of the Centers for Disease Control, the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, and persons with ties to the New England Compounding Center, the organization responsible for the distribution of the contaminated steroids.

To ensure that the NECC is represented and subject to questioning by Congress, a subpoena has been issued for the chief pharmacist and co-owner of the facility.  An invite had been extended previously, but the individual had declined, and thus members of the Committee looking into the matter felt a subpoena was needed to ensure cooperation.

With investigations and lawsuits either ongoing or about to become reality, the NECC has taken pains to contend that inconsistencies between state and federal law make determining permissible production practices difficult.  They maintain they have not been in error in this situation.

Only time will tell if that is indeed the case.  Stay tuned for further developments which are sure to come to light following these hearings.
