Netherlands Creates Bike Lane Heating System for Winter Riders

Posted on November 2, 2012

There are numerous ways to encourage people to turn to bicycles, including the installation of bike lanes and other infrastructure that promotes safety and saves commuters money.  Could heat in the winter months be next?  In the Netherlands, a country renowned for its efforts to create a bicycle-friendly reputation, officials plan to install heating pipes beneath bike lanes that would use the warmth built up during the summer to keep cyclists warm in the winter.  The pipes are thought to be cost-effective and offer a chance for bicyclists to take to the road when it would otherwise be impossible or prohibitive due to the cold or the accumulation of ice.
