The wide-ranging peanut butter recall stemming from various nut ingredients supplied by Sunland Inc. has claimed yet another product. And unfortunately, this latest recall concerns an item that may have been available at your child’s school.
The affected products are Uncrustables peanut butter and jelly sandwiches from Smucker’s. The United States Department of Agriculture announced the recall, which pertains to bulk shipments that contain 72 different packages each. These circular items were distributed to schools as part of the National School Lunch Program. They are typically held within vending machines found at the schools that received the product.
Sunland provided the peanut butter for these sandwiches, and that peanut butter may suffer from a Salmonella contamination. This bacteria is particularly dangerous to children, the elderly, and those persons whose immune systems have been weakened in some way.
An inspection did not turn up a Salmonella contamination, however, the USDA is being cautious and issuing a recall anyway. It’s been made known that no other Smuckers items are thought to contain potentially affected Sunland peanut butter.
A spokesperson for the USDA stated that affected school districts have been told of the danger. As such, the Uncrustables are not being provided to kids at the schools. As it is, the items were reportedly about to expire anyway.
