NHTSA Exploring How Best to Regulate Autonomous Vehicles

Posted on October 30, 2012

We’ve come one step closer to seeing autonomous vehicles on the roads.  The administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently discussed how the organization plans to regulate such vehicles to ensure safety in the future.  The agency has been in discussions with Google in order to arrive at an idea of how regulations could work, and plans seem to operate on the assumption that there will be three levels of automation as time goes on.  The first involves monitored automation, in which a driver must monitor everything that’s happening, conditional automation in which he or she can relax while the car does the work, and full automation where all responsibility is on the vehicle.
