AVID Touring S Tires Recalled by Yokohama Over Deflation Risk

Posted on October 12, 2012

A recall has been issued not for a vehicle, but for those tires that are meant to transport that vehicle safely to its destination.

The Yokohama Tire Corporation announced the recall, which affects AVID Touring S tires.  Affected tires were manufactured from February through April of 2009, and only tires of size 215/65R16 98T SL suffer from the defect that necessitated this particular recall.  10,669 tires in total could potentially be compromised by a safety issue.

That issue stems from the casing turn up area positioned within the lower sidewall above the tire bead.  This casing turn up area might not have the proper geometry, which could lead a crack to form within the lower sidewall itself.  If this takes place, the tire could become rapidly deflated.  Should the deflation occur while the vehicle is in use, the tire is in danger of failing outright, thus putting the vehicle occupants in danger of being in a crash due to the sudden loss of control.

Free replacement tires will be provided and installed by dealers, and consumers affected by the recall will be alerted to the issue by Yokohama.  October 20 marks the date that the recall is likely going to start.  Questions can be directed to the company.
