In Southern California, heavy traffic makes it exceedingly rare to even be in a situation where you could drive 85 miles per hour, but the state of Texas is unveiling a toll road that has that very speed limit today. Texas Highway 130 will allow drivers to travel up to 85 mph between Austin and San Antonio. What kind of impact this will have on safety has yet to be seen. One would hope that drivers opt to still be cautious behind the wheel and not do things like drive while intoxicated or while talking and texting on a cellphone.
