Kroger To Cease Carrying Sprouts Over Lack of Safety Assurance

Posted on October 26, 2012

Kroger grocery stores will no longer carry sprouts due to the risk that the items could potentially pose to consumers.  That means that 2,425 stores will no longer keep the item in stock.  In coming to their decision, Kroger cites the difficulty in ensuring the safety of sprouts.  Germs can pile up within the seeds, and indeed, since 1990 alone, 54 outbreaks of E. coli have occurred in conjunction with sprouts.  Consumers looking to ensure safety are advised by the FDA to cook the sprouts all the way through prior to consumption.
