2.5 Million-Plus Vehicles Recalled by Toyota Over Fire Threat

Posted on October 12, 2012

An astonishing 2.5 million-plus vehicles are being recalled by Toyota North America.

A wide range of automobiles is affected by this recall, including the Camry, the Corolla, the RAV4, the Highlander, the Tundra, the Yaris, the Scion, the Seqouia, and the Pontiac Vibe.  All vehicles were of the 2007, 2008, or 2009 model years.

This massive recall is the result of the identification of a safety defect that poses a fire hazard.  Apparently, the lubrication process conducted on the internal components of the power window switch was not carried out properly.  This means that this switch assembly is in danger of malfunctioning.  If this occur, then the component can overheat, melt, and if things get further out of hand, a fire could break out.

Owners will receive a notification from Toyota, although there is as of yet no word on when the recall is set to begin.  If the fire threat makes itself known, owners are being advised by Toyota not to fix things themselves.  Instead, they should contact either an authorized dealer or the company’s customer service center.  Once the vehicles are brought in to a dealer, a grease meant to prevent overheating will be applied.  The switch will be replaced in those instances where the malfunction already took place.

Pontiac Vibe owners will be contacted by General Motors.
