Meningitis Contraction Hinges on Numerous Factors
Some 14,000 citizens across the country may have been treated with a steroid injection that was compromised by a fungal contaminant. A widespread meningitis outbreak believed to have resulted from these steroids has already caused 214 people to become ill and tragically ended the lives of 15 individuals. But why have there been so few reported illnesses amid thousands of potential victims? For one thing, doctors responsible for administering the injections could have used different techniques during the procedure. If the spine’s protective membrane was breached, the risk for infection becomes greater. Those persons who were repeat patients also may have been exposed to the contamination at greater levels. Plus, the level of contamination may also have varied from vial to vial.
