Budget Cuts Threaten to Delay Civil Cases in Los Angeles

Posted on October 15, 2012

Budget cuts are coming to the Los Angeles courts, and some officials are worried that this move could have a detrimental impact on the city’s entire judicial system.

$30 million is being cut, and that means that 100 non-courtroom workers will be losing their jobs and civil cases will no longer automatically benefit from the presence of a court stenographer.  The Presiding Judge who announced the cuts said that the sharing of staff and courtrooms would cause administrative complications and that civil cases might take longer to make it to trial.

For those who would like a stenographer present, the litigants would have to foot the bill.  Judges themselves might have to make their own notes in regards to the evidence being presented.
