Tips On Protecting Yourself From Cellphone Dangers

Posted on October 10, 2012

Our society is more connected now than at any point in human history.  Although this has obviously been a boon for the distribution of information, the prevalence of mobile communication devices is not without its risks.  It’s important to remember that, as with any emerging technology, we have to be careful that we don’t lose sight of the proper safety precautions.  A new article advises citizens on how to heed off the numerous disasters that could stem from using a cellphone or some similar device.

First, one of the big ones:  texting and driving.  At this point, it should go without saying that you shouldn’t do it.  Yet some people still continue to engage in the practice.  Don’t fall into that trap.  Don’t text and drive, and also don’t text while walking.  Authorities are becoming increasingly aware of the link between distracted walking and pedestrian injuries or even death.  Use your phone only at times when you can afford to focus all your attention on the device.

Have you ever been put in a situation where you’ve lost track of where you put your phone or tablet?  It’s an unenviable positions nowadays, because having the wrong hands getting ahold of your cellphone can be as dangerous as someone laying claim to your wallet or car keys, if not more so.  Smartphones provide access to account information, valuable identification information, and more.  Keep your phone somewhere you know you’re not likely to misplace it.

By the way, that means not putting the phone on the table when you’re having a meal.  Not only can you easily forget the phone that way, it’s just plain rude.

Keeping mobile devices secure should be a priority for anyone in this modern era.  Almost all phones now come equipped with the ability to create a pass code in order to be able to access the device.  Take advantage of that ability.  Security, though, extends past just misplacing the phone.  Hacking is a very real threat to anyone with a smartphone.  Thankfully, there are things that can be done to prevent that threat from becoming a reality.

First, use virus detection and prevention software on your phone the same way you would with a computer.  Today’s phones operate in much the same way as a personal computer, yet people who wouldn’t dream of going without anti-virus protection on their laptops don’t give a second thought to neglecting its installation on a phone.  Similarly, don’t click on emails or links that you can’t verify are from a trusted source.  Constantly update your software, and take advantage of your device’s encryption capabilities in order to further protect yourself.
