The city of Minneapolis, Minnesota has created a position for a bicycle and pedestrian safety coordinator, but the move has garnered its share of controversy. Many people are upset that such a position has been put in place at all, given cutbacks in other parts of the government. These cutbacks include fire department layoffs. The Mayor, though, says that such a position is vital if the city wants to sustain a reputation of being safety-conscious to bicyclists. The coordinator does not wear a helmet when he rides his own bike. This is done in the hope that bike riding isn’t viewed by citizens as being hazardous.
